surf shack

I apologize for my lack of posts, my life has quite been uninteresting lately with a lot of work and deadlines and more work, only with the occasional midweek glass of wine or glass of beer. You can follow me on instagram and see how I try capture a wee bit of "intersting-ness" in these mundane moments. Such is an architect's life. But don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining! However, photos and stories of blueprints and tile sourcing are not very blog worthy I think.

Anyway, I came across this article thru my friend Kiddo and I wanted to share it with you. And I think...I think I found my dream house. Moreover, it combines two of the things I like most -- cozy, pretty homes and one of my ultimate surf idols, Kassia Meador. (If you don't know how much I love her, please click here and here)

When I was younger (and jaded?) and was a student of architecture, I would dream big and hope to design mansions and buildings and the like, and of course, my dream home was a huge house made of glass and steel overlooking the city with fancy cars in the garage. But as I got old(er) and especially when I became a surfer, my view of the perfect home changed. I now long for a seaside home, not big, but not tiny, just cozy. Wooden floors, with the morning and afternoon sun shining thru big windows, a surf rack, and bikes in the garage. Ok, maybe a Range Rover in the garage wouldn't hurt. *wink*

In this article from Indoek.com, Kassia talks about her home in Sta. Monica and how she loves having space for her dog Iruka, and being able to walk to anywhere she wants to go. It's basically my dream house, in reality. Everything about it is perfection -- the colored stucco walls, the potted cacti, the hammock, the old school range. I would love to live in a very similar shack next door. Of course being Kassia's neighbor wouldn't hurt. :)

I am pretty much in love with this space.

there's something about a raw look added with dainty little details that combines masculinity and femininity and makes it so cool.

small

Most of my posts are either about surf or beach trips, summer and summer fashion, but I'm also a city girl! I also (kind of) love the hustle and bustle of a city as much as I love the serenity and calmness of the oceanside. Almost.

And being in the city means not having beachfront vastness, or a huge piece of land to build a nice beach house with awesome views on. As a designer, this poses as a challenge for us to create a comfortable, efficient, functioning and beautiful home in a small space -- which most of the time is the only size a city has to offer.

This New York City apartment is my absolute favorite inspiration when it comes to small spaces. It is so modern and functional yet still feels homey.

It's genius how each nook and cranny of the house is used as storage. No corner has gone to waste!

These 3D models show how small the space really is and how the designer made the best out of it.

Definitely inspiring! Imagination is everything!

lusting after...

... this dressing room. But I'll change the ottoman into a plush lounging chair or even a bean bag or a hammock. And I will not be owning only black white and grey clothing. And no golf bag. I'll put a bag or hat stand instead. Or a lamp. And I'll put some artwork to make it more into a dressing ROOM rather than just a walk-in-closet.

... and this vanity table. But I'll tweak it again by not putting it in an old-fashioned room. the same table, mirror and lamp in a modern room (see dressing room above), a more modern floral piece.

... this coffee table-slash-fireplace. Why didn't I think of this???

I also want it to be cold enough so we actually DO need a fireplace.

Anyway, these are a few of my favorite things (right now). I don't think the dressing room's doable unless I buy a house. hahaha

room(s) with a view

Of course we all dream of a room in the house where we can just back relax and enjoy a nice view. Whether it be your living room, porch, bedroom, etc. Of course if the location permits, we want a huge picture window overlooking the ocean, mountains, watching the sunset or sunrise.

But I like seeing rooms/spaces that are usually just tucked in a corner somewhere, and turning it into a light airy space...which you can actually hang out in.

not just a normal bookshelf
We usually just put a bookshelf against our wall and maybe a seat and lamp beside it as our reading space. Here, a nice little nook is turned into a reading nook with an awesome view. I could stay here for hours on end! I'd just make the cushions more on the plush fluff side and put a coffee maker somewhere. #javajunkie

As I mentioned in my post here, i am against designing (walk-in) closets that are usually just a closed box where we store clothes and stuff.
{like so}

But if I had the space (and money) to make a walk-in-closet, I'd go all out.

I love a walk in closet where you can sit while choosing clothes! And a nice full window wouldn't hurt either.

Although modern kitchen designs are already embracing kitchens are comfortable rooms also, more often, kitchens are still just slapped against a wall opting for more storage/work space than windows.

home office

Since I am a freelance designer/architect, I have the luxury of just working from home. But of course I believe in keeping your work separate from your home life so the solution is a home office! I do have a little corner in my room where all my print outs, sketches and clutter are, but I want to jazz it up a bit!

unfinished?

GT House | Fona LaShay

this room is just PERFECT in my opinion. wow.
#iwant

I'm absolutely loving the raw concrete accents and exposed piping. So industrial chic! The space is softened form the masculinity of the concrete and pipes by those little colorful pillows and minimalist art. And I also love how the frames were arranged in an asymmetrical way. :)

scaled.gt_080910_16

This element I almost always use whenever I design. Not the brick wall per se but how the brick wall is part of the inside and outside, only cut (almost seamlessly) by a glass panel or sliding door.

The closet shows that obviously this is a man's room but I adore it! Check our the little flash of green from the pocket garden through the toilet!

And what a clever way of arranging your books on the shelf!

I am in love with this space.
